On Saturday the 7th of December 2019, the Capital Market Solicitors Association (“CMSA”) held its End of Year Event at the Victoria Crown Plaza Hotel, Victoria Island. Guests started arriving about 4:30pm and the event commenced with an opening prayer followed by the National Anthem. The Chairman of the CMSA, Mr. Benjamin Obidegwu gave his welcome address and expressed his gratitude to all the guests in attendance. There was a beautiful rendition of Christmas songs and other popular tracks by a two-man band led by Terry Moore of the Terry Moore Band, which set the mood and tone for a relaxing evening. Then, special guest, Mr. Bismarck Rewane, member of the Economic Advisory Council spoke on the Nigerian Economy and the Capital Market 2020 prospects. He highlighted that a key factor for the revival of our economy in 2020 is dependent on a combination of smart decisions by the Government and the cooperation of lawyers in the capital market. He explained that the outlook for the year 2020 includes some challenges for the consumer such as tax increases by the government, higher inflation rate due to the border closure as well as challenges for the government in terms of a high possibility of more FOREX restrictions and increased borrowing to meet the revenue shortage. To make a headway despite these challenges, he explained that there must be an intervention outside market forces and the government must play an active role in ensuring a better economy and this would only be possible with support from the legal sector.
Some lucky winners were treated to exquisite prizes during the raffle draw which was actioned by the CMSA Trustees present at the event; prizes included a spa treatment, a dinner for two at an exclusive restaurant and much more.
